Winter gardening
The last Granny Smith on the tree in the slanted winter light I picked last month. Now I'm getting ready to manure and mulch all the fruit trees in the garden (11 in all). Most are pretty small, and only this apple tree and one of the cherries actually produce fruit, but they all made gains in growth due to our efforts to add compost around the base of each tree at least a few times each year. The apples made great pie. The cherries were deliciously sour and refreshing. We added another cherry to try to increase production through cross pollination. Here's to fruit, flowers for the bees, and the hopeful legacy of abundance to come, from our efforts in an empty lot on a busy street.
